New Student Resources

Information for New Students or Prospective Students

Did you know:

  • Asian Americans make up 24% of the undergraduate student body?
  • UIC has over 20 Asian and Asian American student organizations?
  • There is a center whose focus is specifically on serving Asian Americans

The Asian American Resource and Cultural Center was established in 2005.  One of our primary goals is to support Asian American students in reaching their academic, personal, and professional potential.

Asian American Mentor Program

AAMP is designed to ease the transition of new students to UIC during their first semester.  Students are assigned into groups with two Peer Mentors and 4-5 new students for personal support and to help get connected to campus resources. Students also attend academic, cultural, and social events.  To learn more about AAMP, browse the Peer Mentor Program links in the menubar.

New first-year or transfer students starting at UIC in the fall can now register for Fall AAMP. Visit our Peer Mentor Program pages for more information.

Who is eligible to participate in AAMP?

UIC students enrolled who self-identify as Asian American and/or Pacific Islander are eligible to sign up for AAMP. Ethnic backgrounds may include Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Cambodian, Vietnamese, Thai, and Native Hawaiian, or other Pacific Islanders, and more.

A few other things that AARCC does:

  • Hosts Asian American speakers and performers.  Recent visitors included George Takei (of Star Trek and Heroes), Danny Pudi from NBC’s Community, Jin the MC, Lela Lee (a.k.a., Angry Little Asian Girl), Director Eric Byler, Professor Ronald Takaki, and Minnesota State Senator Mee Moua.  Click here for our upcoming events.

Also, as a high school senior, there are a few national and regional scholarships that you may be eligible for, the major ones are listed below (please note that AARCC does not coordinate these, but we list them here as a resource).  Also, check out our scholarships page for additional opportunities for both new and continuing students.

We encourage you to explore our website to learn more about the Asian American community at UIC, discover important resources to help you through college, and find out how you can get involved!
